Saltra LFP / Active Balancer Guide
Active balancers are useful, but they are not BMS replacements.
Active balancers help move energy between cells to reduce imbalance. They can be valuable in DIY builds, but they do not replace over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, and temperature protection.
Buyer pain point
Balancing is misunderstood.
Many builders do not know whether the BMS balance current is enough, whether they need top balancing, or whether an active balancer should stay connected.
What an active balancer does
An active balancer moves charge between cells so cell voltages stay closer together during rest, charge, or operation.
What it does not do
It does not replace a BMS. It does not provide full pack protection, short-circuit protection, temperature management, or inverter communication.
4S active balancers
Useful for 12V builder kits when cell capacity is large and the user wants stronger balancing than many basic BMS circuits provide.
16S active balancers
Useful for 51.2V storage builds where small cell differences can add up across sixteen cells.
Saltra checklist
What Saltra checks before recommending an active balancer.
Build logic
Balancer use cases.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 4S 12V build | Optional upgrade for large-cell packs where the buyer wants stronger balancing support. |
| 16S 51.2V build | Often more useful because more cells means more opportunity for drift. |
| BMS replacement? | No. A balancer is not a safety protection system. |
Next step
Do not guess the build.
Tell Saltra what you are building, your target voltage, application, capacity goal, and whether you already have an inverter, charger, or BMS. We will use that information to recommend a cleaner battery build path before you buy.
